Pre-Spray Tan Checklist

Pre-Spray Tan Checklist: What to Do Before Your Appointment

Preparing for your spray tan is crucial to ensure you get the best results possible. By following this step-by-step pre-spray tan checklist, you'll be set for an even, long-lasting, and beautiful tan that looks natural and radiant. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro, these simple yet effective steps will help you achieve flawless results.

1. Exfoliate Your Skin

Exfoliating your skin is one of the most important steps before getting a spray tan. This helps to remove dead skin cells, which can cause uneven tanning or fading. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub or body brush, focusing on areas like elbows, knees, and feet, where skin tends to be drier. Make sure to exfoliate 24 hours before your appointment to allow your skin to settle and avoid irritation.

Tip: Avoid exfoliating right before your appointment as freshly exfoliated skin can be more sensitive.

2. Shave or Wax in Advance

To ensure your spray tan goes on smoothly and evenly, it's best to shave or wax at least 24 hours before your appointment. Shaving right before your appointment can irritate the skin and create uneven absorption of the tanning solution. Waxing should also be done a day or two in advance to allow your pores to close.

Tip: If you must shave on the day of your tan, do so 6-8 hours prior to your appointment.

3. Moisturize, but Not Right Before Your Appointment

Hydrated skin holds a spray tan better and results in a more even application. However, avoid applying heavy moisturizers or oils right before your appointment, as they can create a barrier on your skin that will prevent the tanning solution from absorbing properly. Apply a light moisturizer at least 12 hours before your session to keep your skin hydrated.

Tip: Focus on moisturizing dry spots like elbows, knees, and ankles in advance, but avoid moisturizing directly before the spray.

4. Wear Loose, Dark Clothing

After your spray tan, your skin may feel sticky and prone to staining. Wearing loose, dark clothing will help prevent rubbing off the tan onto your clothes. Opt for loose-fitting clothes like sweatpants, a baggy t-shirt, or a sundress, and avoid wearing anything tight or restrictive that could leave marks on your skin.

Tip: Dark colors like black or navy blue are ideal as they won’t show any bronzer transfer.

5. Remove Makeup, Deodorant, and Other Products

Before your spray tan, make sure to remove all makeup, deodorant, lotions, perfumes, and other skincare products. These items can create a barrier that prevents the tanning solution from fully absorbing into your skin. Clean, fresh skin is essential for achieving the most even, natural-looking tan.

Tip: Bring makeup remover wipes or a gentle cleanser with you to your appointment to make sure your skin is completely clean.

6. Don't Plan to Sweat Right After Your Appointment

After receiving your spray tan, it’s important to avoid sweating for at least 6-8 hours. This includes avoiding exercise, hot showers, or any other activities that could cause you to perspire. Sweating can cause the tan to streak or fade unevenly. Plan your day around your appointment to ensure you have time to allow the tan to set.

Tip: Opt for a spray tan during the evening or on a day when you don’t have immediate plans that might cause sweating.

7. Avoid Tight Shoes or Footwear

If you're getting a full-body spray tan, avoid tight footwear that could rub off the tan or create marks on your feet. Flip-flops or sandals are ideal for leaving your feet exposed and preventing tan marks.

Tip: Ensure the shoes you wear are comfortable and loose-fitting, especially if you’re getting a spray tan on your feet and legs.

8. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water the day before your appointment to ensure your skin is hydrated from within. Well-hydrated skin will absorb the tanning solution more evenly and hold the tan longer. Keep up your hydration routine before and after your appointment for the best tan longevity.

Tip: Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine the day before your tan, as they can dehydrate your skin.

9. Be Ready to Relax

It’s important to go into your spray tan appointment feeling calm and relaxed. If you're stressed or anxious, it can affect your posture, which might influence how evenly the tanning solution applies. So, take a deep breath and enjoy the process—you're about to get a gorgeous tan!

Tip: Bring a friend or listen to music to help you relax during the spray.
